Pilates is a gentle and effective way to correct postural imbalances and improper muscle recruitment using a specific combination of mat and equipment exercises that is unique to each client's structural blueprint. Pilates is a rehabilitative practice developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s as a means to improve his own health after years of illness as a child; then used with patients in World War II who were bed-ridden and unable to perform the traditional weight-bearing exercises prescribed by Physicians. Since that time, Pilates has earned respect among rehabilitative practitioners worldwide, and has a basis in most Physiotherapy exercises prescribed today. This practice has gained increasing popularity in the mainstream over the past 20 years as an unrefuted approach to eliminating pain and increasing overall fitness without the stigma of the gym environment.
Individual Pilates & Therapeutic Exercise SessionsRe/Active's Pilates and Therapeutic Exercise programs are developed specifically for each client's needs and goals after a thorough individual movement assessment and interview. The objective is to complement the client's lifestyle, and begin to develop awareness of their own body and how it moves in everyday life. Each session is 60-minutes in length, and concentrates on mobilizing tight muscles and joints, and building strength and stability for optimal functioning and performance in life and in sport. Programs include a combination of dynamic mat exercises using various small equipment, and more challenging appartus exercises using the Pilates Reformer and Combo Chair. Capnotherapy
Capnography, or the measure of breathing, has been used for decades in critical care situations in hospitals worldwide. Recently it has been found very beneficial for a number of health conditions, and is quickly finding a place in the clinical setting.Hypocapnia (overbreathing) is caused by a chronic breathing pattern of short inhales followed by long exhales. This results in the limited intake of oxygen and the excessive release of carbon dioxide, creating a number of negative consequences on an individual’s health. In the case of back or neck pain, overbreathing is often caused by muscle-bracing in the upper body that is guarding against the pain symptoms. As such, inspiratory muscles begin inhalation from an already contracted position, therefore reducing the amount of oxygen that can enter the lungs. The resulting force of recoil on exhalation, pushes too much air out of the lungs, thereby causing a hypocapnic condition.Overbreathing can easily be treated using a sophisticated computer biofeedback device to re-train a more efficient and optimal breathing pattern, and restore breathing chemistry. This practice has been proven beneficial in the treatment of a number of conditions, including:
- Upper or lower body injury/pain
- Scoliosis
- Breast Cancer/Mastectomy
- Hypertension
- Obesity and Type II Diabetes
- Sleep apnea
- Stress
- Anxiety/Depressive disorders
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
